We eat sugar everyday. We add sugar when making coffee and tea. We consume sugar when eating fruits and different foods, such cakes, candies, buns etc. Even ketchup contains a big amount of sugar.
There are different types of sugar, simple and complex. Complex sugar takes longer for your body to break down and is healthier for your body. This type is found in natural carbohydrates such as whole grains and fruit. On the other hand, simple sugar is broken down by your body quickly and causes energy ups and downs. This type of sugar includes refined and processed sugar found in table sugar and added to many sweets. Consuming an excess of simple sugar comes with many health problems.
How sugar is made
Sugar is made from sugarcane, a tropical plant that grows in sunlight places and demands large amounts of water. The sugarcane plant typically takes a year before it can be harvested. When this plant is harvested, the roots are saved, for future harvest. The sugarcane plant can continue to grow, as long as the roots stay in the ground.
In order to create a sugar, the plant is flattened under large rollers, which squeezes out all of the natural cane sugar juice used to form the sugar. This juice is filtered through evaporation in order to be purified. By evaporating the juice, the syrup becomes clear of soil. The purified cane sugar syrup is boiled to form sugar crystals. The sugar crystals harden and form sugar. These sugar crystals are what we consume.
It is high in calories
Sugar is bad for your health because it has calories. There are many products that contains sugar. Sugary drinks, candies, cookies, donuts, buns, breads, all kinds of sauce, such as ketchup, and protein bars, and others. You should always read a label to know, if there are sugars. Sometimes they can be hard to spot on nutrition labels, since they can be listed under a number of names, such as corn syrup, agave nectar, palm sugar, cane juice, or sucrose. So you can easily consume a lot of sugar in soft drinks, and in all kinds of food.
